The Witcher 2, Part Two: Game So Far (spoiler-free)

Written By: MerseyMal - May• 21•11

Well after my initial issues it’s now running perfectly around the 70fps mark at 1680×1050 in High mode. It’s still not getting the most out of my graphics cards horsepower (75%-ish most of the time) but possibly driver optimisation will sort this out.

My main gripe with the game is that I have a dual monitor rig and most games will lock the mouse into the gameplay area when running in full screen, but in the case of TW2 it doesn’t which often resulted in me clicking on the desktop of the 2nd monitor and causing the game to minimise. So I now have to temporarily disable the 2nd monitor which is a shame as I usually leave Seesmic Desktop running.

But less of the negativity. The game is looking fabtastic (yes it’s a word so look it up…if it isn’t there throw out your dictionary as it’s obviously developed a fault.), I’m loving the story and its not always linear timeline and I’m finding the combat more enjoyable than in the previous one.

The Witcher 2, Part One – Installation & Setup

On Tuesday, The Witcher 2 was finally out in the wild. Due to commitments that evening, I had to postpone diving back into the world of Geralt the Witcher until last night.

Initial Thoughts: DC Universe Online (PC & PS3)

Written By: MerseyMal - Jan• 18•11

I have a few friends playing the PC version of this and they were enjoying it, and so I decided “what the heck” and bought it.

Character customisation is pretty impressive with a wide enough variety to minimise the risk of embarrassment of bumping into someone in exactly the same costume.

I spent the weekend trying various combinations of powers, movement and combat skills and still not quite sure what I’ll stick with yet. Flight is probably what I’ll stick with for movement though the others (Acrobatics and Super-speed) are rather fun.

Control-wise, I find the 6 power limit on the action bar a bit restrictive and not being an aficionado of Street Fighter and its ilk, I’m not used to combos for my combat skills which involves various combinations of tapping and holding down mouse buttons.

Questing is pretty normal for this sort of things. Main ones are multi-part with tasks to defeat x of particular type of minions, repair/destroy/transport y amount of specific objectives, before going into an instanced building to fight your way through minions, possibly destroy/fix/take more objects along the way before fighting a boss (e.g. Bane) often with the aid of a famous/semi-famous superhero.

Not experienced much PvP action yet as I chose a PvE server for my initial playing, but I’m certainly going to give it a go despite the dread that it’ll just be a gankfest.

It’s rather quite fun though it feels like a DC licensed and polished up version of City of Heroes, albeit simplified for the PS3 crowd (I suspect). The game definitely benefits from the vocal talents of actors who will be familiar to fans of DC superhero cartoons too.

Vinyl Rip: Adamski – Killer

Written By: MerseyMal - Feb• 28•10

“Killer” was written by Adamski and Seal. It was Seal’s breakthrough performance, despite not being credited on the front cover.

This is one of the songs that I particularly remember from my time as a student.

It reached #1 in the UK singles charts in May 1990, where it stayed for 4 weeks. Seal re-recorded it the next year without Adamski and that version is also in my collection (to be ripped later).

I bought this on 12″ single and is an extended version of the song. On the b-side are the tracks “Bassline Changed My Life” and “I Dream of You”

If you have Spotify, you can listen to the single version HERE.

Patricia “Auntie Paddy” Wycherley (1933-2010)

My Auntie Paddy, the eldest of my mum’s three sisters passed away yesterday afternoon after her battle with cancer ended.

She will be missed very much and my thoughts are especially with her children (my cousins David, Simon, Neil, Ruth and Jane) and her grandchildren as well as her sisters (my mum and Auntie Lindsay)

Vinyl Rip: Phil Lynott – The Yellow Pearl

Written By: MerseyMal - Feb• 14•10

I’ve just started to transfer my vinyl record collection and a section of my new blog will be recording them as I…well record them.

Here goes…

Phil Lynott - Yellow Pearl

“Yellow Pearl” was written by Phil Lynott and Ultravox‘s Midge Ure.

It was commissioned by the BBC to be the theme music to the television show “Top Of The Pops” in 1981. It wasn’t until 1986 that it was replaced by Paul Hardcastle’s “The Wizard”. This reminds me of Peter Powell, Mike Read, Gary Davies and Bruno Brookes but, despite that, this will always be the TOTP theme to me.

It reached #32 in the UK singles charts.

The version I have on vinyl is the 12″ single and is an extended remix of the song. On the b-side is a song called “Girls”.

If you have Spotify, you can listen to the 7″ single remix HERE and an alternative version HERE.
